Why set out to evict asthmatic children and elderly residents, bulldozing 20 to 30 year-old gardens before the eyes of grieving gardeners who had given chunks of their lives making green magic out of garbage-strewn lots? But let's hear it for Bette Midler and the New York Restoration Project which she started in 1995. She saved 150 of the gardens. May they all be saved.
